Twisting Nether

Balance

The idea

Every Warcraft III unit has a StarCraft II counterpart that sets its price, supply and strength: the Grunt is a Zealot, the Archer a Marine, the Tauren an Ultralisk. When several races field a unit for the same role, they don't get four copies: each race's version trades speed, toughness, range and damage differently around the same anchor. All values are at Faster speed.

Tier-1 infantry

In StarCraft II one Zealot costs as much as two Marines or four Zerglings. Twisting Nether keeps that exchange rate:

Unit Counterpart What that means
Grunt Zealot 100 minerals, 2 supply, 150 HP, armor 1
Footman half a Zealot 50 minerals, 1 supply, 75 HP, armor 1; two Footmen equal one Grunt, and Defend halves ranged damage
Archer Marine 55 minerals, 1 supply, range 5
Ghoul two Zerglings 55 minerals, 1 supply, fast and hard-hitting, no armor

Like Zerglings against Zealots, Ghouls win an open brawl cost for cost; the armored Grunt and Footman hold through armor and their active abilities.

Siege weapons

Somewhere between a Siege Tank in tank mode (range 7) and in siege mode (range 13, splash), because these fire on the move. Anchor: range around 10, about 15 damage per second with splash, 150/125, 3 supply.

Unit Role
Mortar Team the fastest and longest-ranged (11), lowest damage, fragile, cheaper (125/100, 2 supply)
Glaive Thrower range 10.5, glaives cut through a line of units
Meat Wagon the all-rounder: range 10, Siege Tank speed, carries corpses
Demolisher the slowest and shortest-ranged (9.5), but the toughest (220 HP, armor 2) and hardest-hitting

Heavy melee

The Ultralisk is the anchor: 275/200, 6 supply, 500 HP, armor 2, about 57 damage per second with splash.

Unit Role
Tauren the Ultralisk
Knight three quarters of an Ultralisk and the fastest: 400 HP, armor 2
Mountain Giant the wall: 700 HP, armor 3, less damage; it taunts and throws your army
Abomination a cheaper cleaving brawler with a disease cloud

Ranged and support

Unit Counterpart Role
Dryad Hydralisk high damage, spell immune and fast, slows its targets
Huntress Marauder armored, glaives bounce between targets
Kodo Beast Sentry support: War Drums and Devour

Air

Unit Counterpart Role
Flying Machine Phoenix fast anti-air with flak splash; carries infantry
Hippogryph Phoenix the close-range brawler, tougher
Gargoyle Viking short-ranged anti-air, can turn to stone
Dragonhawk Rider Mutalisk Aerial Shackles and Cloud
Troll Batrider a fire-bomber that burns ground targets and can crash into enemy fliers

Capital ships

The Carrier is the anchor: 350/250, 6 supply. The Chimaera hits only the ground (and buildings from far away) and hits it hard; the Frost Wyrm is tougher and also hits air, slowing what it freezes.

Armor

Units have the base armor of their counterpart: Zealot-like units 1, Ultralisk-like units 2, Marines and Zerglings 0. Armor upgrades add to it, as in StarCraft II.

Structures

Every structure matches a StarCraft II structure by role and takes its cost, hit points, armor 1 and build time: town halls cost 400 like a Command Center or Nexus (the Tree of Life 350 plus its Wisp), tier upgrades cost like Lair and Hive, and supply buildings cost 12.5 minerals per supply for every race.

Altars

Each race's altar pays for its spells in a different currency, so the prices differ: the Orc altar recharges its own energy, the Human altar costs minerals and gas, the Night Elf altar is fed by Moon Wells and the Undead altar by sacrificed Acolytes. Stronger spells have longer cooldowns: 30, 60 and 90 seconds by tier.
